Inlays and onlays are custom restorations used to repair teeth with moderate decay or fractures that are too damaged for a traditional filling but still have enough healthy structure for conservation. They allow your dentist to restore function while preserving your natural tooth.
An inlay fits within the cusps of a tooth, while an onlay replaces one or more cusps. These restorations are durable and can be made from gold or tooth-colored materials, depending on your needs and preferences.
Preparation is similar to a filling: decay is removed, the tooth is shaped, and the restoration is fabricated either in-office or at a dental lab. Temporary restorations protect your tooth until the custom inlay or onlay is permanently bonded.
